4 April 2007. Is GM the future?
Professor Chris Leaver Although Australians are generally optimistic about science and technology, most are still confused about the idea and technologies behind genetically modified organisms (GMO). Some say No to genetic engineering, while others believe GMOs are the answer to eliminating problems such as world hunger. So what are GMOs? Should we be worried about them? What are the benefits and risks? The University of Sydney is pleased to host a lecture by one of Britain's leading authorities on GM crops, Professor Chris Leaver, who will be joined by a panel of Australian plant scientists for some thought-provoking discussion on this contentious field of science.
Come along and learn more about the future of GMOs in Australia and the wider global community. While the lecture is free, seat bookings are essential as places are limited. Please call (02) 9351 3021 or email infoatscience.usyd.edu.au to book seats (maximum of 5, except for school groups 4 April 2007 Co-presented with the Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Design at the University of Sydney. 5 April 2007 PhD short presentations Nicola Cottee (PhD Student, FAFNR) 'Thermotolerance in cotton' Vinod Kumar (PhD Student, FAFNR) 'Extraction of preformed antifungal compounds from rockmelon fruit rind' Chair: Dr Daniel Tan (Word doc) 5 April 2007 Professor Barbara Wisch presents Fabricating Images:Jews, Clothing and the Sistine Ceiling The Ancestors of Christ in the Sistine Ceiling traditionally have been viewed in a negative light—belonging to 'the sphere of shadow and death'—in large part due to their murky tonality before the cleaning of the 1980s. The renewed visibility of the Ancestors has engendered much discussion, with several scholars proposing more positive interpretations. However, within this discourse a significant marker has been overlooked: Michelangelo placed a yellow, circular badge—the Jewish 'sign' as it was called in papal decrees and city statutes—on the left shoulder of Aminadab, located prominently in the lunette above the papal throne. This illustrated presentation explores the implications of this sign as a quintessential indicator of demeaned status in a society that demarcated Jews by imposing degrading dress codes, legislated their role as moneylenders, and subjected them to humiliating public spectacles. Barbara Wisch is Professor of Art History at the State University of New York College at Cortland.
She is currently Visiting Professorof Italian Studies at the University of Sydney. 5 April 2007 Modern Lasers and their Applications, by Denison Distinguished Visitor Prof Harald Giessen. Lasers are around us every day, in laser pointers, DVD players and our doctor's surgeries, but more amazing applications are appearing every day.
In this fully illustrated public lecture, Dr Harald Giessen will explore the next generation of lasers. They are smaller, more powerful, and make fact out of science fiction; creating x-rays, sending secure quan- tum signals and trapping individual atoms for us to experiment with. Professor Giessen will also describe how we may soon have lasers better than light sabres. They will be able to cut through metal and make precision measurements, effectively doing away with traditional lathes and mills and opening the way for entirely light-based factories.

Was his air-brushed, comic-book take on suburban housing and decoration celebratory, critical, or deliberately ambiguous in tone? How significant an influence on his art were graffiti, drugs and Punk music? How central was his role in the history of Australian art in the last quarter of the 20th century? Making his way up to the first floor, he picked up a piece of marble and threw it at a small blue and white pot, smashing it into over 200 pieces. The Duke of Portland, who owned the pot, was not amused. And so was broken, for the first of three times, one of the most famous, yet enigmatic objects in the British Museum, the Portland Vase. Ever since it was first seen in a private collection in Rome in 1600, mystery and intrigue have surrounded the Vase.
No more so than in the many, often bizarre and wonderful attempts to make sense of its imagery. Peter Paul Rubens, Erasmus Darwin (grandfather of Charles), and Josiah Wedgwood have all tried. Most recently it has even been suggested that the imagery indicates that the Vase is a Renaissance fake.
